Biology/Ecology and Story factors: Native of some of the forested areas of Omwat, a true terror for the native Omwati. This spider is the very pinacle of evolution for arachnid bird hunting. Operating in small packs of 3-5, they use their web threads as snares and to alert them to the presense of prey. Once they detect something, they release pheromones that cause a metabolic terror effect in bird and bird evolved species, this causes them to panic and either freeze or bolt, right into more of the snare threads.

The spiders can then drop onto their prey and bite, injecting a paralytic venom, and using their web to entangle them, but generally avoiding the chance of being harmed if possible.

Omwati are aware of these creatures mostly from myth, few Omwati survive the encounters. One rather disasterously ill fated attempt to keep these spiders in captivity resulted in mass panic throughout the zoo. It should be noted that the Omwati were unaware of the pheromone effect until assistance from an unlikely source. Shortly after being freed from imperial slavery, a small crew of smugglers with rebel sympathies was on Omwat, they had been taking some shore-leave before taking an Omwati diplomatic delegation to meet some off-worlders. They encountered and were able to defeat the spiders, much due to the lack of bird metabolisms as anything else. On discovering this particular feature, they were able to give the Omwati park rangers and the like a better handle on the problem. Source: Private Campaign Creation; Walrus
